Laptop Troubleshooting - A Guide to Quick Repair

Laptop troubleshooting is an important operational function which every laptop owner and user should know as it will facilitate in the proper running of the laptop. Let us take an example, suppose your laptop is not working, you will start checking its battery and other things but fault could be different. This is where laptop troubleshooting comes into use. You yourself can solve and repair several technical snags of your laptop which will save you from laptop technicians. A dead LCD trouble may be due to the failure of video adapter, main-board, a burnt out backlight or bad inverter. Such troubles can be easily solved with the help of laptop troubleshooting manual.

There is no point is replacing a LCD if it has a minor technical problem, it is replaced when blocks of dead and burnt out pixels or physical crack in the glass appears. You might be thinking that laptop troubleshooting differs from company to company but it is not like that, fundamentals are same. If you know laptop troubleshooting, you can address technical problem of any of the laptop like HP Compaq, Toshiba Satellite, or IBM ThinkPad. Although, these laptops are equipped with AMD, an Intel CPU or a PowerPC but they all experience more or less identical technical snags because of affinity in design and structure.

Identification of the snag is the first point in laptop troubleshooting. Suppose, if there is a snag related to power then rectify this by restoring proper power supply. Check LED, power plug and battery in this regard. If you find that all these things are working properly then check the power switch and main-board supply. This is how you can solve your problem related to power supply. If you think that your laptop battery get exhausted soon then through control panel allow the power saving modes. If you want to clean your laptop from dust, then its better to use good quality solder sucker.

If there is a problem of video failure, then your first step should be checking the power supply. If you had heard the sound of your laptop at a point of time but now there is no such sound then this could be indication of it's a power failure from the main-board instead of video failure. If there is any internal disorder of the physical connectors like the detachment of network or modem port then soldering should be done with the help of a quality solder. If you want to check mother board or internal video adapter then connect an external monitor with a regular VGA; if there is no light in the external monitor then you should check the above faults.

Even if your external monitor is working properly then also there could be problem in the video subsystem. If you notice - dead spots or columns or complete row augments gradually on the screen, then it shows that the assembly of LCD in your laptop is poor. If you find that screen glow fluctuates then most probably it is a failure of backlight or inverter. These were some of the highlights of laptop troubleshooting (one may frequently witness such snags) but you will find it useful in number of other ways.

Home Improvement Remodeling - Start in the Kitchen Or Bathroom

Modifying a room in your home can be a huge task. Your home improvement remodeling may need lot of planning and your time. You will see that many home improvement remodeling projects may require a considerable amount of monetary resources as well yet hiring a local remodeling contractor can make the planning process hassle free.

Lots of times, just a bit of home improvement remodeling can perk a space up by giving it added color. Even the littlest alterations in an area can provide a big lift both visually and emotionally. Numerous projects can be accomplished on your own with store-bought kits. On the other hand, an area builder has equipment, experience, and relevant suggestions that are highly likely to be much better.

If you want to remodel your home, you should first consider remodeling your bathroom . You can find some photos about bathroom remodeling online for reference. Then you can simply install new faucets and shower accessories to give your bathroom a whole new look. However, if you want to remodel your bathroom effectively, you may want to ask a contractor for advice .

You may possibly change the fashion of a space to any point in history. To mend the temperament of a room is to take a predictable looking one and change it to a contemporary one in some way. Modern style uses a blend of conventional and intermediary objects, which show fine in any room. We are coming to know local contractors that are incredibly well versed in these remodeling techniques.

When you are looking to soften the appearance of a room or an area, consider the large selection of decorations and accessories possessing an antique, warm brushed, or satin tone finish. The hard luster of chrome can be replaced with the soft sheen of brushed nickel. Antique copper is another exquisite, silky metal often available through remodeling contractors for a reasonable price.

Simply painting a room can drastically modify the feel of the room. Remodeling contractors around the country boast of new painting methods still not available to the general public. In order to choose the best color scheme for your room, consider the direction the windows are facing. If the windows face to the south or the west, then cooler colors provide a better lighting effect. If the windows face to the north or the east, then hot colors like orange, yellow and red are the best choices.

When deciding that more than one color should be used for your project, it is recommended that you lean towards the strong color as your main look. You will want the bolder color to be the main theme and then select a more subtle color that will give it added style. You might want to get the advice of a local contractor for advice for your home improvement remodeling job. It can be rewarding.

Your home improvement remodeling can be a diminutive venture that can go a long way. Alterations in fashion can radically change a room. Kits can help homeowners, but nothing replaces a contractor's expertise. The bathroom is a good location to start. Most bathroom remodel projects can be completed in a short time. Changing the hardware is one way. Replacing faucets and shower heads can revolutionize the room's appearance. One technique to change the mood of a room is to paint. A process that contractors are using is if the windows face south or west use cool colors. If the windows face north or east then choose bright warm colors.

Drywall Water Damage

Drywall is a material used for finished construction of core walls and ceilings. Recently if your walls / ceilings have been spoiled due to slope that is directed towards your house, floods, leaking pipes, or any reason, then immediate attention should be given to them to treat them successfully. Here are few tips to treat the ugly looking drywall water damage patches on the wall.

The best way to treat the drywall water damage is to isolate the complete area. Check the area for softness and discoloration. At times it helps in detecting the cracked and leaking pipes. The dripping water down the roof or overhead pipes are indicators of severe problem, therefore call a professional help immediately. If you are handling the damage all by yourself, then here is checklist of tools you would require for repairing the damage: industrial strength fans, joint compound, drywall patch, drywall tape, putty knife and nails.

For isolating area from the rest cut wet drywall patch from rest of the wall and circulate air through vent using high intensity fan. The high intensity fans are available at all hardware stores easily. If you have a dehumidifier, then turn it on to put the moisture completely away from wall. Continuously monitor the process of drying, still if you find moisture after 12 hours then detach more segment of the wall. This will help in better airflow and prevent development of molds & mild dew. Once the wall dries completely then reinstall the drywall & studs. While reinstalling people have reported instances, where after the water damage there has been ruptures in the wall or buckles has erupted then carefully sand down the portion and do the needful. If the crack is very large, then it is essential to install a plywood supporter board on studs. This will help in holding the new drywall properly at the place it is been fixed.

If necessary take a professional help. If the damage has occurred due to pipe leak then leave a small gap / clearance between the wall & floor top. This will protect the wall from any future damage due to water leak. Hope this article on drywall water damage would have been useful to you.

You Need Country House Plans If Building a Non City Home

Are country house plans for you? Most people love the city life because it offers so much excitement. However, there are times when they crave the tranquil surroundings of the countryside. Some people plan to move to the country after their retirement so they can enjoy the natural beauty and peace when they no longer are attracted by life in the fast lane.

Buying a country home is expensive and often you may not be able to find exactly what you want, so having a home custom built may be a good idea. If so, then you will need country house plans, perhaps even log style house plans, detailed house floor plans and a reputed builder.

Determining your budget is an important factor when you are deciding on what type of country home you would like to build, even before you look at house plans. Once you decide on this aspect, you will be able to look for appropriate plans that will suit both your taste and pocketbook. Perhaps building it in phases would be a good idea. This would help you keep the initial financial requirements low.

There are special software programs available that can help you work out the cost of building. Whatever style house plans you choose, it pays to keep in mind that the cost of building a two story home will be cheaper than following sprawling bungalow house plans, because the floor area, the foundation and the size of the roof will be less.

The one huge advantage of building your home in the countryside is that you can be as bold as you want with your design. In the city there is a basic need of conformity, which often stifles creativity. Not so with your country house plans, as you will have the space and more leeway to do as you please.

Before you start with your countryside estate home plans, take a look at what is available both on and offline. There are plenty of websites and books that offer exceptionally beautiful and cost efficient home plans, which you could use as you find them or have them modified to your liking.

City life is great when you are young and on the go. You love the fast life it offers, you need the employment opportunities available and you enjoy being at the center of the action. At the same time the quiet and natural beauty of the countryside also beckons you. It is a great idea to build a home in the country. Use the country house plans available on and offline or draw your own for this purpose.

How to Fish Wires Through Walls

1. Decide where you want the wire to exit the wall (do not drill any holes yet) Use a stud finder to make sure the wall has no cross beams between the exit location and the ceiling.

Once you have determined the wall is clear from exit location to the ceiling, cut out a hole in the wall where the cable is to exit.

2. Bring the wire into the wall. Either from the crawlspace or the attic. the crawlspace can be done with a flex bit (3-6ft drill bit sold at lowes or electrical supply house) drill down through the hole in the wall and use the bit to pull the wire back up. Attic is a bit more difficult. You will need help locating the stud wall. Have someone tap lightly on the ceiling with a broom handle. You can feel the vibration with your hand to identify the exact stud wall location. Drill through the center of the 2x4 stud directly beside the tapping and drop the wire through the hole with a glow rod or some kind of weight to pull it down to the hole you cut in the wall.

3. Tips: You can use an insulation brace from the crawlspace to drill in the ceiling that will show you the location if you are working alone. Easily fixed (small hole)

4. Try to identify markers such as light fixtures, ducts, electrical outlet lines, or anything you can use to locate your wall from the attic or crawlspace.

5. Warnings: Always be sure of where you are drilling. If you are not sure it is the correct location, measure again.

6. Be careful when using a flex bit, once it breaks through, stop and tap the bit to see what you are going to hit next. Listen to the sound, may be brick piling, PVC water pipe, or an air conditioner. They each sound different.

You Can't Afford That Garage - Home Tips

For those of us who have a home that did not come with an attached or detached garage but could use one to house our cars or need one for storage, it is overwhelming to find out how much it costs to build a standard garage. The foundation alone is more than most of us can afford right now.

There is also the hassle of the code process with the local building departments as well as hiring a good and competent contractor who can deliver the job for the quoted amount. It seems that, in the world today, very few jobs come in at the quoted price. It just does not make since when you break it all down into dollars and cents.

Now what to do?What you need costs more than you have but you still need a garage!Believe it or not, you do have a few choices. If you need some type of covering for your vehicles, a carport may work for you or a portable garage that is more like a plastic sheet structure that can go from place to place.

Even though you may think it crazy, you will need to check with your local codes or community boards to find out if you need any type of building permit to construct these structures. It is always better to find out before you purchase and install any of these than to find out you have to tear them down because you did not get the correct permit.

Another great and cheaper way to go is to put up a plastic garage, otherwise known as a vinyl garage. These garages have a great reputation for being sturdy and come in various sizes so you can customize whatever you need. The more extra storage you need for storage, the deeper the garage you can buy.

Another great garage that is a lot more inexpensive and comes in varying colors, shapes and sizes are the metal garages that can be put up over a weekend. These are economical for residential and commercial uses and are a good choice for many areas of the country. You can determine by your region the correct structure for snow load and wind speed.

The bottom line here is if you are in need of a garage, there are a lot more choices than you may realize.Find the one that works for you and go for it!

It's easy to construct a Duramax garage. There are other great outdoor products and structures for your home and garden to choose from.

Buying a Vinyl Fence? Home Improvement Chain Store Prices Are Not What They Seem

You see them advertise on the TV every day, orange aprons fluttering down the aisles at Home Depot, "You can do it! We can help!?", the warm voice of Gene Hackman telling you "Lowes, let's build something together". These big names spend big bucks to convince you that if you want to improve your home you need to do it up big time at their big name, big box, home improvement chain stores.

Whew, that's a mouthful and in a lot of ways very true too. Except for vinyl fencing. Oh, they sell vinyl fencing and their prices seem to meet the big box standards but everything is not always as it seems.

One of the first questions clients always ask me is, "How do you compare to them?" or "Why was our fence more expensive then theirs?" (If it was more). I found the best way to respond was by simply telling the truth. Sometimes our prices were more and sometimes they were less but one thing was certain. We always delivered a higher quality product.

I have nothing against them and have even advised certain people that the H. I. C.S. might better suit their unique needs. For example, I had a guy who was flipping a property and needed the cheapest fence he could buy. He wasn't concerned with how long the fence would last, he just wanted to sell the property. I suggested, Home Depot.

The key to big box store shopping is to know, what you are getting for the price you are paying. I highly urge you to go and look at their fencing first hand. Feel it, touch it, push it and you will see that it gives quite a bit. The panels are thinner and are generally hollow with no internal ribbing and reinforcement.

They also utilize a bracket system which is an inferior way to assemble vinyl fencing and requires external hardware which distract from the clean lines of vinyl. Their fencing usually comes pre-assembled.

Oh, I hear you out there, "Isn't that more convenient?"

Yes, assembled sections do provide more convenience but always remember that lower quality residential grade vinyl fencing normally comes assembled, as fence panels, while prime quality commercial grade vinyl fencing always comes unassembled.

Why? To be able to ship your order more securely so you receive it, complete and undamaged. It also allows you the opportunity to personally attend to each stage of construction, insuring the lifetime strength and durability of your fencing investment.

Keep in mind that the slide and pop assembly of commercial vinyl sections are very similar to "legos", making them relatively easy to assemble. I, personally, am not a very handy man and I can tell you, from experience, they are not hard to put together.

One last thing to realize when evaluating prices between the H.I.C.S. and a vinyl fence dealer. The H.I.C.S. 's panel pricing, generally, does not include the costs of posts and caps. This is very misleading.

They get you in on the appearance of a lower price, which is usually for the fence panel only. Then they add in these costly but essential items at the time of sale. Right when you have reached that point when you are ready to buy.

Odds are, you usually carry on with the sale and find out the hard way that the posts and caps are where these stores make their money. Which is why they sell their fencing in six foot panels (rather then eight) as this means more posts and caps. You will of course, need posts and caps to assemble a vinyl fence. So when you're pricing various options, you'll need to add these costs into the total.

Wow! That great chain store price wasn't so fabulous after all, was it?

Think about it. If you are going to make a lifetime investment in vinyl fencing for your beloved home. The rule of thumb is that, quality always trumps economy. In the long run you'll end up paying less for a whole lot more.

Lead in Your Home

If you live in a house built before the 1970s, painted surfaces may emit lead. According to a report by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, 74% of private housing built before 1980 has lead paint somewhere. To find out how hazardous your house may be, send dust samples from the windowsills and floor, and chips of paint itself to a certified lab to the analyzed. Effective home kits can also be purchased. Here are some other ways to minimize the dangers of lead in your home:

  • Frequent cleaning of floors and windowsills with a TSP (trisodium phosphate) solution to remove dust will help if lead levels are not too high. For carpets use a shampooer that vacuums up the dirty water, and don't count on vacuum cleaners to sweep up dust-they tend to emit dust (carrying lead) back into the air. Instead, wet down the surfaces with TSP solution two times, wet mop with a high-phosphate soap that has been diluted, then clean with a wet-and-dry-shop-type vacuum cleaner. Keep children away from lead-contaminated areas. Wash their toys and keep them away from dirt and sandboxes that can be contaminated by flaking exterior paint.

  • Don't sand or use a heat gun on lead paint.

  • Consider using encapsulating paint to cover lead-containing old paint. Or use drywall or wallpaper backed with woven cloth to cover old paint. Replace contaminated woodwork.

  • Lead abatement by a qualified contractor is the most expensive method. Call your local office of the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development to find a qualified contractor. Make sure the people who do the work have attended a lead-paint-abatement program. While work is being done, children and pregnant women should live elsewhere.

Buying Pre-Construction Lofts & Condos

There is major trend in the condo buying world of purchasing units in a building long before they have even started the construction. There are some great benefits to the purchase of pre-construction units. Let's examine some of these benefits in closer detail.

To start, usually these units are extremely competitively priced during the pre-construction phase. Condos, like any home appreciate over time, however trends have shown that condos appreciate at a remarkably rapid rate. So once the building is complete, you can expect the prices of the units to skyrocket. This translates into a great investment for people who "get in on the ground level" of new developments. Another interesting aspect of this kind of purchase is the fact that many complexes sell the units as "designer ready." Designer ready implies that it will be up to the owner of the unit to choose the interior design as the units are basically an empty shell without appliances, paint, fixtures, counters or cupboards.

Now, most developments will have struck deals with certain designers or firms that will offer owners a variety of interior packages. Typically this can involve any number of different materials for floors, countertops and cupboards with many options for fixtures and of course you can personalize the paint. If you are looking to create you ideal space; personalized in every way, then a designer ready condo is the ideal purchase.

Be mindful of whether the unit you are looking at buying is completely ready to be decorated as some units come drywalled and ready to go and some do not. Be sure to get in writing from the developer exactly what is included in the purchase price and what is not. No win consultation with the design firm you have selected or that the builder has recommended, be sure that you see artist renderings of everything that is to be done to your blank slate. You should never give the go-ahead on anything until you have seen what it's actually going to look like though drawings and computer renderings. This is an essential step in ensuring that your color selections and general design choices work and create the theme that you have been imagining. This is your opportunity to create you dream condo, good luck!

Green Construction Periodicals Keep Up To Date

The mere idea of green construction, much less the practical application of the philosophy is fairly new. The field is evolving quickly which means periodicals are a good way to keep up with it.

The green construction movement has become well established in the United States and Europe. One sign of this growth is the number of magazines that are devoted to the subject. One such magazine is Green Source - The Magazine of Sustainable Design. The new magazine is a product of McGraw-Hill Construction and is targeted to the over 40,000 architects, interior designers, building owners, and members of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Environmental Design + Construction is another magazine that is directed toward architects and designers and that addresses green construction issues. There are articles concerning research issues and current design trends. There are reviews of various products. You can find out about the latest environmental issues that impact green construction.

Green construction is certainly a modern concept. This is reflected in the large number of online magazines and newsletters that are devoted to it. EcoIq is one of these. It is an online journal that claims to be dedicated to a future that works. Environmental Building News is a monthly news letter that gives unbiased information on green construction. You can check them all out to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.

There are two very popular green construction magazines published in Canada. Green Living is dedicated to the lifestyle. It is aimed more at consumers than at the builders and designers. It gives information on all of the environmental choices that we are going to be facing in the future. Healthy Living is the other magazine and it is from the same publisher and stresses the healthy aspects of green construction. In keeping with the totality concept of the green lifestyle even the pages of these magazines are made from glossy tree friendly paper that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

These are just some of the periodicals and online publications that are being produced to capitalize on the popularity of green construction. The issues that are raised in these periodicals are of great concern to a wide variety of readers. Builders and designers are kept informed of the newest trends and research, as well as the newest environmentally sound products. The consumer is able to follow this information also, but can take it further. They are able to learn of how these environmental concerns influence the health and well being of their families. Although none of the periodicals have made it into the very top tier of magazines, the day is coming when one of them will move into the best seller list. Green construction is still a rising star on the horizon of the American landscape, and before long a magazine will come along to catch the imagination of the public.

Figuring the Lumber For Interior Wall Framing - Home Remodeling

Framing a new wall, anywhere in the home will not be very difficult to do. However, removing an interior wall on the other hand could be an enormous task and create some big problems, especially if you remove a loadbearing wall. A loadbearing wall would be something that is holding up another section of the home, like the roof or the floor.

If you're not removing or moving a wall, framing a new wall is a task that most homeowners with very little skill can do quite easily. Let's start with the basics, most walls are built from 2 x 4 framing lumber, which can be purchased at any lumber yard or home improvement center.

Let's start with measuring the length and the height of the wall. For example let's say that the wall you intend to frame is going to be 8'7" long and 8 foot tall. If I was going to figure the lumber for this wall, or how much material I would need. I would start with some simple arithmetic.

We need one bottom plate and one top plate. This would be the lumber that's going to run horizontal or right to left in our wall. So now we know that we need two pieces that will be 8'7" long and since they only sell lumber in 2 foot increments, our choices will be narrowed down to a couple of 10 foot two by fours.

The height of the wall is 8 foot tall and will require us to buy 8 foot two by fours. Now how many two by fours am I going to need? Most walls require 16 inch on center placement of the vertical two by fours, or in other words the two by fours that go up and down will be spaced 16 inches apart. If I was to divide 16 inches into 8'7", that would require 7 - 8 foot two by fours.

It's pretty simple math and don't forget to convert your measurements into inches to make the job easier. 8'7" can be converted to inches by multiplying the number of feet times 12, 12 times eight and then adding 7 to it will give us 103 inches. We can now divide 16 into 103 inches to give us the amount of vertical two by fours needed to frame our interior wall.

Don't forget there's 12 inches in a foot.

Create Your Own Home Bar Pub

Turning your home bar into a pub themed bar is a fun and creative experience. Authentic pub furniture and pub accessories add a wonderful warmth to your home bar. The best way to get started designing your home pub bar is to visit local pubs in your area. Depending on where you live, their should be no shortage of them. Plan on visiting more than just one, so that you get a variety of pub design ideas for your home bar. Be sure to take notes, as you're certain to find ideas that you want to duplicate.

In many of these pubs, you'll notice thick barstools and tables made of rich, dark woods. Often, the barstools have long legs and high backs. Frequently, the barstools have padded armrests. These are features that you may want to consider for your home bar. In a pub that has an Irish pub theme, you'll frequently find one long, sturdy table in the center of the bar. This table is used by patrons who know each other well, so that they can share a "cold one" at the end of a hard day.

As far as "sharing a cold one" goes, don't forget bar accessories that promote famous brews. A very classy element to your home pub bar would be taps and spigots with labels from "Guinness" or "Harp. "As a matter of fact, thick mirrors promoting "Guinness" or "Harp" are also authentic. The paintings in your home bar pub might consist of famous British or Irish landmarks. You might also want some pictures of famous English or Irish historical figures.

And the darts, don't forget the darts! No home pub would be authentic without a dart board and darts. Oh, and I almost forgot, an element of class is to have a home bar with a brass rail for a foot rest. And remember to have plenty of pint size glasses/mugs within easy reach.

Wow, all this writing has got me thirsty, I guess I'll grab myself a cold one!

Home Remodeling Anxiety In California

Your thinking about remodeling your home. You have asked everyone you know if they have a good contractor they trust or do they know anyone who does. You might have read a few articles like this or visited a couple of web sites to get as much information as you can about dealing with contractors during a house remodel.

Now the time has come for you to take the first step and call one of the contractors. You have spent some time looking through books and magazines to find just what you want done to your house. You have a idea of how much money you are going to spend if the job can be done exactly how you envision it.

You have called the city or county building department in your area to find out what is required from them in the way of building permits. If you have done some of these things you are ahead of most homeowners. There are a few of you that do know what can be done with a rough idea of how much the project will cost. A ball park figure lets say.

Most of the home remodeling Anxiety is caused from the miscommunication or no communication. The biggest problems I have had are from some sort of communication misunderstanding. I have been very lucky with having less than a handful of what I would consider a major home remodeling problem.

Do your best to explain what it is that you want done to your home. This also means understanding what it is exactly in writing what you are going to have done to your house. If you or the contractor do not understand this could lead to a possible anxiety attack and a problem.

Once you hire a home remodeling contractor the next step is to let them do their job. This doesn't mean. If you are watching them tear into a wall and the picture on the other side is about to fall off. Don't bother them. Of course stop them and remove the picture. We all make mistakes. If you see something isn't working out, talk to your contractor about it.

Don't be afraid of your contractor. If you see that what you had in mind isn't working out to your satisfaction. Explain the problem calmly and be to the point. I don't like it when someone beats around the bush and I never get to the problem. I would rather have them yelling at me, telling me what a jerk I am than taking two hours to make a point I have to drag out of them anyway.

If you do come to a problem that neither one of you can solve or you think the other one is at fault for whatever reason. You can contact the Department of Consumer Affairs and explain your situation to them. There is a good chance if you need a arbitrator they will set up a time and day for you and your contractor to meet. The arbitrator will come to a final decision for the both of you and that will be final. Of course their is always the Supreme Court... Well we don't want to go that far do we.

Most of the time if you have everything in writing in the form of a contract you shouldn't have any problems. If you do there is a great chance they will be able to be resolved quickly.
Doing major remodeling to your home can be extremely stressful at some points. Listen to your contractor when he is giving you advice on how to deal with the stress. He is a good source of wisdom especially if he had been doing it for years.

Resolving home remodeling anxiety will be a little more difficult during the construction process. It is very important to think the remodeling project through all the way to the end if you can. Try to think about worst case scenarios and figure out the best possible solutions before they happen.
